DFW 2017 ROOKIE PROFILE: DE Derek Barnett

Derek Barnett – junior / 6’3′ / 260 – Tennessee

  • He shows the strength and the patience to get off blocks
  • More than a pass rusher, he forces the edge and ebbs and flows against the run
  • His mean and powerful bull rush is only the beginning of his passing rushing skills
  • He seems to find that extra gear or “jump” in his pursuit when the prize is within in reach
  • His field awareness is uncanny for a DE as he is not always charging full-throttle at the QB (which allows him to patrol the area he is responsible for)
  • He understands the moment which may actually hurt his overall stat line but it helps those around him
  • Not coincidentally he reminds us of the late former Vols legend Reggie White
  • Barnett did surpass White as the Vols all-time sack leader
  • All but one of his 32 career sacks came against Power Five schools and 29 of those sacks came versus SEC schools
  • Can get low when needed and he really bends a fine edge, sometimes even dipping below that 45 degree angle
  • His IDP future might be very scheme dependent as he would be best served to remain a 4-3 DE
  • It could be possible for him to give it a go as a 3-4 DE but he would need some weight to hold up, which may slow him slightly
  • This may give Barnett an IDP advantage over a guy like Myles Garrett who is more scheme friendly and might even get asked to play 4-3 OLB
  • Basically we know Barnett what is (a rock solid 4-3 DE) and since he looks to get drafted beyond “the best player available point” he should get dropped into the right situation for him
  • Again, 3-4 DE would hurt his value but not kill it, he has wide enough thighs to hold his ground
  • Ranked as the #11 strong side DE in the nation coming out of high school, #169 overall and #5 in the state in the state of Tennessee
  • Also heavily recruited by Florida State
  • Arkansas, Cincinnati, Duke, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Louisville, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Ohio State, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt also showed interest
  • COMBINE UPDATE: TBD
  • NFL DRAFT SELECTION: TBD
  • DYNASTY ROOKIE: 3.01-4.01, honestly we would feel comfortable taking him higher if our preferred offensive players were gone.
  • 2017 OUTLOOK: TBD
