DFW 2017 ROOKIE PROFILE: DL Solomon Thomas

Solomon Thomas – junior / 6’3″ / 271 – Stanford

  • Players bigger than his size and he is quicker than rational thought for his size and position
  • He may be too big to play 4-3 OLB, yet he might not be bigger enough to 3-4 DE
  • We see 4-3 DE as his best fit for his IDP value
  • Likely a situational stunter as a rookie
  • Definitely a player you can use in any gap
  • He is more than just a pass rusher, he can set the edge and give any kind of run game fits
  • He plays angry but stays disciplined, he knows how, where and when to hit or pull up
  • Very explosive and destructive in the B Gap, usually requires a double team
  • Rarely gets knocked to the ground
  • Pro comparions include Howie Long, Brian Robison and Michael Strahan, yet he is likely faster then all of these players
  • He put on an absolute clinic versus Notre Dame in 2016 (12 total tackles, 1.5 TFLs and 1.5 sacks)
  • Always charging with his quick and powerful footwork
  • Great at the hand swipe to gain in separation
  • Needs to be more elusive when shooting the gap, gets corralled to easy when trying to lower his shoulder
  • Often gets to upright too soon especially in a 3-point stance (or DE)
  • Will over pursue at times but still continues on relentlessly trying to make a play
  • Needs to use more arm extension to stun would-be-blockers
  • Ranked as the #3 strong side DE in the nation coming out of high school, at #37 overall and #4 in the state of Texas
  • Also heavily recruited by Alabama, Arkansas (official visit), Baylor, Cal, Notre Dame, Ohio State and UCLA (official visit)
