DFS Bargain Bin: Week 17

By Luke Grilli, DFW Senior Writer and Co-Owner @LGrilli88

Want to win some cash this week? Well I’ve got your back. My Daily Fantasy strategy is this, load my team up with the likes of Antonio Brown and Julio Jones ($9,000+) to get the guaranteed points, while filling out my rest of the roster with cheap player who are in a prime position to outscore their salary. Each week, I scour the bottom of the Draft Kings and Fan Duel buckets to get YOU the best bargains around. Follow along and let’s win some money!

Matthew Stafford

Draft Kings Salary: $6,000
Fan Duel Salary: $8,000
This week, the goal is to look for players that have something to play for…and Matthew Stafford and the Lions have something to play for against divisional rival Green Bay Packers. Stafford if the perfect mix of not just having something to play for, but also having a price point just outside the top QB tier. Stafford has struggled the past few weeks (due to the dislocated finger perhaps?), but last time he played the Packers, the former Georgia Bulldog lit up Green Bay for 385 yards passing and 3 TDs. This is likely to be a high scoring game where the two best QBs in the NFC North let it fly. I like Stafford to score as a Top 5 QB this week.

Running Back
Jacquizz Rodgers

Draft Kings Salary: $4,900
Fan Duel Salary: $5,200
It was a shock in Week 16 when Doug Martin was a healthy scratch and an even bigger shock when it was announced that he would have to serve a 4 game suspension and head to a treatment facility due to a failed test that showed he took Adderall. Slot in Jacquizz Rodgers who has been the far and away better running back this season. Martin’s future in Tampa Bay is in question, but the present is all about Jacquizz Rodgers. Charles Sims was sent to the IR for the 2nd time this season, so the Panthers should expect to see a ton of ‘Quizz on Sunday. Carolina boasts a solid run defense, but the volume Rodgers should see makes him well worth the price point in both Draft Kings and Fan Duel.

Alfred Blue
Draft Kings Salary: $4,300
Fan Duel Salary: $5,600
The Texans have locked up a playoff spot, so I would be shocked if they rushed Lamar Miller back from an ankle injury that kept him out of their Week 16 contest against the Bengals. Even if he is active Alfred Blue should see the lion’s share of touches to keep Miller healthy for their 1st round playoff game. If that is the case, Blue will be in line for another 20+ touches against the Titans, in what is sure to be a low scoring affair as Matt Cassel and Tom Savage meet head to head in a game that just screams “MEDIOCRITY!!!!”. Like Jacquizz, the volume potential at the current price point is too much to pass up here. Draft Alfred Blue so you can save your money and pair him up with an elite player like David Johnson this week.

Wide Receiver
Steve Smith

Draft Kings Salary: $4,900
Fan Duel Salary: $5,800
I’m not just suggesting that you take Steve Smith to be your bargain pick this week. No…you take him and start him regardless of the fantasy football format you are playing in. In what SHOULD be his last game as a pro (he gives it an 89% chance that he retires), Flacco is going to feed Steve Smith so he goes out with a bang. One of the feistiest players to ever lace them up, Smith will go down as one of the most memorable characters to grace us with his presence on the football field. I don’t even care about the match up with the Bengals. You could put Smith against the 86 Bears and I bet he’d still put up 20 fantasy points this week.

JJ Nelson
Draft Kings Salary: $4,600
Fan Duel Salary: $5,300
On my podcast last week (@GloryPodcast), we talked about how tough it will be to decide between JJ Nelson and John Brown each week now that Michael Floyd is a Patriot and Brown is healthy. Well that’s apparently false and the player to own is JJ Nelson. He has scored 5 TDs over the past 4 games and amassed 10 catches for 276 yards from scrimmage in the same time period. Against a beatable Rams D, I expect Nelson to catch another long ball and find the end zone for the 6th time in 5 games. Pick up him and enjoy the production from the speedy Cardinal receiver.

Tight End
Coby Fleener

Draft Kings Salary: $3,100
Fan Duel Salary: $4,800
I really don’t feel totally comfortable about this pick, but you could do worse at Tight End. Fleener has only seen 9 targets over the past 3 weeks as Brandin Cooks finally gets involved in the offense again, but that means he is due, right? Drew Brees loves to spread the ball around and that has been evident with Fleener’s up and down season, but since the Saints play the Falcons who have one of the leakiest secondaries in the league, I wouldn’t be surprised if Fleener had a nice bounce back game. The Saints are out of the playoffs, but I’m sure they’d like to knock their NFC South Rival out of the 2nd seed in the NFC. The Saints will play to win this week.

Defense/Special Teams
Baltimore Ravens

Draft Kings Salary: $3,000
Fan Duel Salary: $4,500
Even though the Ravens don’t have anything to play for, their Defense is still one of the best in the league. When you see them priced this low against a Bengals team that has lost a ton of skill players to injury (Eifert, AJ Green, Jeremy Hill maybe?), you have to deploy them in all fantasy formats. I like Baltimore to be a Top 5 Defense this week and would only take a few DSTs over them in Draft Kings and Fan Duel.

And there you have it. Find any better bargains in the Draft Kings or Fan Duel cache of players? Let me know on Twitter or in the comments!
