Patrick Mahomes – Jr / 6’2″ / 225 lbs – Texas Tech

  • Another raw dual-threat QB who took over the reigns in his 2nd year at Tech throwing for 4,653 yards and 36 TDs and besting that as a Junior with 5,000 yards passing and 41 TDs.
  • 53 total TDs in ’16 which was the most by any other player including Lamar Jackson.
  • One of 11 other QBs in FBS history to pass for over 5,000 yards in a season and also 1 of 3 ever in total offense in multiple college seasons.
  • 2016 All-Big 12 2nd team.
  • Amazing to watch with the best arm in the draft class chucking the ball 78 yards at the NFL Combine. Not to mention a quick release.
  • Can make all the crazy throws regardless of arm trajectory such as side-arm throwing across his body on the run, etc.
  • His strong arm and velocity will allow him to pick apart zones and a soft touch when needed.
  • Very athletic and has all the physical tools.
  • Will be very effective in play-action.
  • Has a gunslinger’s mentality and often compared to Brett Favre and Jay Cutler.
  • Not the tallest QB at 6’2″.
  • Uses his eyes and pump fakes to manipulate defenses.
  • Should be a factor picking up yards on the ground when the pocket breaks down or in the red-zone.
  • His gunslinger tendencies can lead to some bad decision making.
  • Solid pinpoint throws and is accurate on the mid-to-deep throws as well.
  • Needs to anticipate his throws more in the NFL.
  • Could take some time to develop in a Pro Style offense after playing in a spread style scheme at Tech.
  • Will need to work on his 3, 5 and 7-step drops. His footwork will develop just fine.
  • High ceiling low floor type of player if he doesn’t develop.
  • Tends to force the the action with the big plays versus taking what the defense gives him.
  • Grew up playing baseball and basketball and started playing football in 7th grade.
  • Lightly recruited by North Texas, Rice, Houston before signing with Tech.
  • Rated by Rivals as a 3-star recruit coming out of Whitehouse HS while ranking 12th overall for best dual-threat QB prospect of his class.
  • COMBINE UPDATE: 40 = 4.8, Vertical = 30″, Broad Jump = 9’5″, 3-Cone = 6.88
  • NFL DRAFT SELECTION: The Chiefs traded up in order to select Mahomes at 10th overall.
  • DYNASTY ROOKIE: 2nd or mid-1st in superflex format.  While I love his skill-set his draft spot surprised me quite a bit.  That being said it is a QB driven league these days and it’s hard to win without a good one so teams are ultra aggressive during drafts.  He will back Smith up for the ’17 season but he should be the guy at some point during the ’18 season if not the start of the year.  If Andy Reid can help him develop he should end up being the best QB from this class.
