The Art of the Deal...in Fantasy Chapter 2
Now that we’ve covered some basic trade types and how to handle them, it’s time to focus on the types of owners you’re likely to run into and the tactics that they will use to close a deal, skew it in their favor, or stall for time. If you can recognize what the other owner is trying to do and counter it with the appropriate technique, you’ll find yourself far less likely to be on the losing end of a trade or left holding the bag while the other guy just closed a deal with someone else. You’re likely to notice that you do some of these things during your trade process too, so this is an opportunity to see what might happen if you try out some of these moves.

The Art of the Deal

One of the most exciting events in a Fantasy Football season is a trade. More so if it's a trade you're involved with. Trades give owners a way to bolster a position of weakness, cover up a draft mistake, or even make a push for a championship at the expense of the future. A good trade is entirely subjective and nearly impossible to quantify, since your goal at the end of the trade can be wildly different each time. Additionally, what your trade partner is looking to get out of the deal can often also be wildly different each time. Realizing exactly what your needs and your trade partner’s needs are can be the single biggest factor in getting a deal done. The trick is to get that deal done and give up the least necessary amount to do it. For the purposes of this initial article we will be focusing on some common types of trades, why you'd want to be involved with one, and how to approach them.

Off-Season Buy Players

I treat dynasty like the stock market and I am constantly looking to trade to stay ahead of the market. The biggest mistake I see teams make in this format is just sitting on their team and not making any moves. You sit on your team long enough value will come and go and you will more than often lose out on any potential moves while player values spike and then disappear after a season or two. The best owners can guesstimate who's value will go up or down based on past production and future changes whether player personnel (competition), coaching changes, offensive philosophy changes, aging, etc. If you can take in all the data and formulate an opinion on how that will play out moving forward then you can buy and sell players and consistently win on deals. Just remember past performance doesn't guarantee future results.
Here are some players I would look to target this off-season based on in-season expectations and go-forward value, tomorrow I will release my sells.
