Tuesdays on THE WIRE

By Shawn Gallagher – DFW Writer

Every week we’ll take a look at players that could be future waiver wire darlings in the coming weeks.  Our goal is to identify the players that are trending in the right direction and have a possible opportunity for increased playing time in the very near future.  It’s always hard to grab guys after they’ve broken out, so if you have the roster space you might want! to give some of these guys a shot before it’s too late.  This column is also a good opportunity to showcase one of the all time great shows in television history, HBO’S “The Wire”.

A few quick notes on this column

We are focusing mainly on Dynasty value when we recommend these players, although some could certainly work as popular pickups in Redraft and Keeper Leagues as well.

We are once again trying to predict future value, looking to see whose value could rise within the next few weeks or months, with the Waiver Wire in mind.

Each league is different, so don’t think you have to go and add all these players listed, but they are at least worth monitoring, especially if you have roster space.

Some of these players mentioned could already be on a dynasty roster, but could very well be acquired cheaply in a trade, possibly even a throw-in in a larger deal.

Championship Time! (In most leagues)

Yes friends, we’ve finally reached CHAMPIONSHIP TIME in your fantasy leagues!!   Hopefully many of you have a championship game (or multiple championship games) to prepare for, and if that is the case, best of luck to you!! If not, you’re still in luck of course as next year’s championship could be won right here on the waiver wire, and here’s hoping you can make “ALL THE RIGHT MOVES” !!!!!!!

Matt Flynn – Hold (and hope he leaves Seattle) – We’ve reached a point where it seems that everything Russell Wilson does turns to gold when dealing with the Seattle offense! Wilson has helped to lead Seattle to over 100 points in the past two weeks, and has shown strong running ability as well as passing ability.  With a playoff spot in reach, it seems like Wilson is here to stay as starting quarterback in Seattle.  It seems like a long time ago that Matt Flynn was seen as a franchise quarterback and starter in Seattle, and despite a very nice paycheck, Flynn isn’t seeing any action with the Seahawks. Dynasty owners need to hold on to Flynn at least until next season where there is a chance that Flynn could land somewhere else as a starter.  With plenty of bad quarterback situations (Arizona, Kansas City, Jacksonville) its certainly possible that someone like Matt Flynn could resurface somewhere else in the not too distant future as a starter.

Matt Moore – Dynasty Stash – 28 year old Matt Moore figured that he could at least squeeze in another year as an NFL starting quarterback, but the Dolphins were “tempted by the fruit of another” with rookie Ryan Tannehill and Moore was relegated to back up again. With any luck and a good agent, Matt Moore could resurface as a starter again in 2013, or at least land in a better situation where he’ll have a better chance to win a starting job.

Curtis Brinkley @ N.Y. Jets – Dynasty owners cannot be surprised to see another Ryan Mathews injury, as another broken collarbone will sideline Mathews for the rest of the season.  Curtis Brinkley carried the load for the Chargers this past week in the absence of Ryan Mathews, and should at least get a couple of starts as the Chargers finish this season.  Brinkley is definitely worth a look in deeper dynasty leagues and for any owners of Ryan Mathews, who realize that a good handcuff is essential when dealing with Ryan Mathews.  Lets also hope that for the sake of Ryan Mathews owners, that he eventually can have a productive career and get though these injuries, realizing that “everybody hurts” sometimes, so hold on!

Bryce Brown – HOLD – Bryce Brown took the fantasy world by storm a few weeks ago with some impressive performances with Lesean McCoy out battling injuries.  Brown has a serious issue with fumbling right now and the Eagles and dynasty owners could be losing patience. I would advise owners to Hold on to Brown, as he’s still very young at 21 years old, and fumbling problems are often a correctable issue, especially when he’ll be given a full offseason to focus on it.

Donald Brown – CUT – Another underwhelming season for Donald Brown has found himself on the injured reserve list in Indianapolis, and rookie Vick Ballard has taken hold of the starting running back job there. While its possible that Brown could go to another team and attempt to revive his career, it simply isn’t worth a roster spot, especially in leagues where roster spots can be very valuable.  Sorry Donald Brown, its time for you to “Go Your Own Way”.

Richard Murphy vs. New England – It seems like its almost a requirement for this column to have plenty of Jacksonville Jaguars featured, and here comes another one. Richard Murphy was a recent addition to the Jags offense from the practice squad and started to receive some action in the Jacksonville backfield this past week.  Murphy comes from a strong running attack at LSU in college, and might get an extended look with Jacksonville during the final two weeks of this season.  Dynasty owners could be wise to monitor the Jacksonville running back situation and Richard Murphy closely as the season comes to an end.

Dan “Boom” Herron @ Pittsburgh – We featured Boom Herron earlier during the season in this column as a running back stash, and the Ohio State product has recently been promoted from the Cincinnati practice squad and is now directly behind Benjarvis Green-Ellis in the Bengals backfield.  While the law firm of Benjarvis Green-Ellis has had a nice season with Cincinnati, the future in their running game could very well come from rookie Boom Herron.  Herron is seen to be a strong pass protector and has experience in a pro-style offense, and could assume a much larger role in the Bengals running game in the next few weeks.

Travis Benjamin @ Denver – Travis Benjamin has provided explosion and big time playmaking ability in the past couple of weeks for the Cleveland Browns. Benjamin has demonstrated elite speed that has been shown in receiving and returning kicks for the Browns, and the Browns coaching staff simply must find more ways to get Benjamin the ball and increase his role in the offense.  If Cleveland has new coaches next season, they will certainly have a weapon at their disposal in Travis Benjamin, and someone who certainly is deserving of more touches and looks in the Cleveland offense.

Marlon Moore vs. Buffalo – Marlon Moore, who is a speedy receiver out of Fresno State has spent a few years in the Dolphin organization and practice squad.  Moore has recently been given an increase in targets in the Miami offense, and developed a bit of chemistry with quarterback Ryan Tannehill.  Moore is a free agent after this season, but he at least is making a case to get another shot in the NFL next season as he seems to be making some progress right now in Miami.

Larry Fitzgerald – Buy Low ( for Jeff) – This is a shout out to fellow DFW writer Jeff Melbostad, who also writes a weekly column here with advice on who to buy low or sell high on in dynasty leagues.  Jeff makes a strong point with Larry Fitzgerald, as we’re looking at one of the most talented wide receivers in football for the past several years paired with a historically bad NFL quarterback situation in Arizona. Fitz’s quarterback situation simply HAS to improve in 2013, either through the Cardinals improving their quarterback situation, or in the event that Fitz ever finds himself on another team through trade or possible hold-out.  Add in the idea that Arizona is likely to change coaches next year, and ownership should certainly keep Fitz in mind when doing so. Be sure to buy Larry Fitzgerald low,  and especially you Jeff!  Things can only get better!

Jarrett Boykin – Dynasty Stash – Jarrett Boykin, an undrafted wide receiver out of Virginia Tech has received plenty of good praise from Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the Packers offense as of late.  Boykin is Virginia Tech’s all time leading receiver, and could certainly see more action in 2013 when both Greg Jennings and Jermichael Finley could be out of Green Bay.

Jermichael Finley – Buy Low – Its been very frustrating for owners of Jermichael Finley, as he seems to have taken a great situation in Green Bay and, and underwhelmed during his time there.  It has been reported that Finley and the Packers are expected to part ways in the offseason, and Finley will likely be on another team in 2013.  While it’s a shame that Finley is likely to leave a great situation in Green Bay, sometimes a change of scenery is ultimately what is needed for certain players.  Finley is only 25 years old, and has been rated as the #1 or #2 dynasty tight end just a couple of years ago.  Dynasty owners should take advantage of others owners who maybe have had enough headaches over Jermichael Finley.

Dennis Pitta vs. N.Y. Giants – Dennis Pitta remains a name that dynasty owners should target this offseason, as he had a huge game this past week against the Broncos, as Joe Flacco found Pitta quite a bit during this past week’s game.  Fellow Ravens tight end Ed Dickson has battled injuries and other issues throughout this season, and Pitta has recently been the one to step up for the Ravens, especially in Dickson’s absence.  Dynasty owners should keep an eye on Pitta during the NFL playoffs this year, and keep him in their minds going into the 2013 offseason. At this point, only a “10th Avenue Freeze Out” could stop Dennis Pitta in the Raven offense.

Kai Forbath @ Philadelphia – It is rare that you will a see a kicker mentioned in this particular column, as only Greg Zuerlein a.k.a. “Legatron” has been mentioned as a kicker in this column before.  Redskins kicker Kai Forbath is now going to be mentioned here as he has excelled in Washington after joining the Redskins earlier this fall.  Forbath, a standout kicker from UCLA has started his Redskin career by going 14 for 14 in field goals and has carried the Redskin team especially in the past few weeks.  While he will always be overshadowed by RG3 and others, it is important to take a look at Kai Forbath, especially in dynasty leagues where we need to find a good kicker and stick with him!

Mason Crosby – CUT – Just for fun we’ll talk about a second kicker this week, but in this case one that should be thrown back to the waiver wire. Once a fantasy darling kicking in a high powered Packer offense, Mason Crosby has seemed to hit a wall during this season, and has already missed 12 field goals this year.  The Packers claim they will stick with him, but dynasty owners should cut him loose, as a struggling kicker just isn’t worth keeping a roster spot over, and some fantasy leagues penalize owners with negative points when kickers miss field goals.

Packers Defense vs. Tennessee – Time to roll with the Packers D this week as a young Tennessee team takes a trip to the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field.  Plenty of opportunities for turnovers this week, as the Titans attempt to keep up with Aaron Rodgers and the Packer offense.   Be prepared to hear plenty of this Todd Rundgren song, which is played every time the Packers score a touchdown.

Panthers defense vs. Oakland – Gotta like the Panthers D here against an Oakland team making a cross country trip after they’ve already checked out on the season.  December means there is also a chance of bad weather happening in this game which could make things even better for the Carolina D.

Colts Defense @ Kansas City – It seems like a broken record at this point to advise starting defenses playing the Chiefs, but it should ring true again this week.  Chiefs fans may be seeing Brady Quinn’s final NFL start this week, or perhaps Ricky Stanzi’s, but either way start the Colts D!

Good luck this week in your fantasy championships, sometimes fantasy championships are “Even Better than the Real Thing” !!!!
