Every week we’ll take a look at players that could be future waiver wire darlings in the coming weeks. Our goal is to identify the players that are trending in the right direction and have a possible opportunity for increased playing time in the very near future. It’s always hard to grab guys after they’ve broken out, so if you have the roster space you might want to give some of these guys a shot before it’s too late.
Jonathan Dwyer @ Denver - The diehard dynasty guys know all about him, but there are quite a few leagues where he could still be available. Sounds like Dwyer could be in line to get the most carries vs Denver this Sunday night. He’s been running hard and determined this preseason and if he shows well early in the season then I have a feeling that they’ll stick with him until Mendy is fully healthy. He’s going to be useful as an RB2 until Mendy is back which could be around week 4-6.
Rod Streater vs San Diego - DHB, Denarius Moore and Ford have all proven to be injury risks at one time or another. Reports are saying that Streater is learning all of the wide receiver positions which is great news. One of those three is bound to be hurt at all times and that means Streater should be on the field a lot.
Lestar Jean vs Miami - Does anyone really believe in Kevin Walters as the #2 WR in Houston? Owen Daniels appears to be a shell of his former self since ’10 before he tore his ACL. Someone will need to step up besides AJ and there is a big opportunity for someone to put up some solid WR3 numbers this season. I like Jean due to his size as he would play on the outside. Martin is more of a slot guy.
Braylon Edwards @ Arizona - Reports are that Golden Tate will more than likely not play this weekend which means that Braylon will start in his place. Braylon still has ability and I wouldn’t be surprised by a revival in Seattle if he gets off to a hot start. He was very serviceable for the Jets the season before last and last year he was stuck on a run-first team in SF with a few health issues.
Taiwan Jones vs Oakland - I had the chance to watch him a bit this preseason and he looked pretty good. From the looks of it if DMC goes down Jones would be next in line! And we all know it’s only a matter of time.
Scott Chandler @ New York Jets - Reports from a few weeks ago were that Chandler was the 2nd best player in that offense behind Stevie. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing for him or a bad thing for the offense. But if he’s targeted more and has an increase in receptions to go with his red-zone looks then he could be a very serviceable TE2.
Donnie Avery @ Chicago - If Collie has another concussion he is probably done for the season. That leaves the door open for either Avery, Brazill or Hilton.
Nick Foles @ Cleveland - All it takes is one shot to Vick and Foles is a high-end QB2 with all of those weapons at his disposal.
Eddie Royal @ Oakland - Vincent Brown is out for a while, so that opens up the slot to Eddie Royal who could surprise. He’s always been more suited for the slot and with SD searching for play-makers to go with Gates we could see quite a few targets to Royal.
Bernard Scott @ Baltimore - Bernard has more game-breaking ability than BJGE and if the workload is split closer to 50/50 then he could surprise. In that case I see flex value all season long and the possibility of earning more work with solid play. The word right now is that Scott will be inactive this week, so we’ll probably have to wait another week on this one.
Christopher Ivory vs Washington - He’s buried on the depth chart in NO, but if a team or two has a major injury at RB over the first weekend then the Saints could be a likely trade partner. Many feel that is why they kept Ivory with the Detroit trade rumors swirling over the last half week or so.
Harry Douglas @ Kansas City - With the looks of a high-flying offense there could be some extra targets to go around as defenses try to shut down Julio and Roddy.
Brandon Tate @ Baltimore - Everyone’s been talking about the rookies all off-season, but Tate was a game-breaker in college and at one point was considered better than Nicks at North Carolina. The opportunity is there for someone to step up. Sanu and Jones are most likely on a roster already in dynasty format so Tate is an interesting flyer.
Jordan Cameron vs Philadelphia - Watson is in line to start, but I could see Cleveland getting Jordan involved sooner rather than later this season as they have visions of Jimmy Graham in their minds. The organization has already stated that they are grooming Jordan to be their future TE, I still think he’s going to breakout this year.
Honorable Mentions - B. Powell, Ogletree/Harris, Zach Miller w/Winslow release and D.Bess.
